Proposal Photographer in New York City, Long Island and New Jersey

A hidden photographer for your proposal in NYC, Long Island or New Jersey, planned with you in advance, followed by a short portrait session together.

You only get to ask once, and it is over in about a minute. A proposal photographer makes sure that minute is photographed properly, without your partner knowing anyone is there. Verma Photography photographs proposals across New York City, Long Island and New Jersey, and we plan every detail with you in advance so all you have to do on the day is ask.

How a proposal shoot works

1. We plan it with you

Tell us where you are thinking of proposing, when, and how. We talk through the light at that time of day, how busy the spot is likely to be, and where you should stand so your partner faces the camera. If you have not chosen a place yet, we can help you narrow it down: a quiet corner of a park, a waterfront at sunset, a rooftop, a beach on Long Island, or somewhere that already means something to you both.

2. We agree a signal and a spot

Before the day we agree exactly where you will stop and how you will let us know you are about to kneel. A marked spot and a simple signal mean we are ready and focused before you reach into your pocket.

3. We hide in plain sight

Our photographer arrives early and blends in as a tourist, a passer-by or someone photographing the view. Your partner should not notice a thing until the question is asked.

4. The question

We photograph the approach, the moment you kneel, their reaction, the ring and the first hug. We keep shooting through the minutes that follow, because the laughter and the calls to family are part of the story.

5. Portraits together

Once the surprise is over, we introduce ourselves and take a short portrait session with the two of you, while the excitement is still on your faces.

What you receive

  • Edited digital photos

of the proposal and your portraits afterwards.
  • Video

of the proposal if you add a videographer, so you hear the words as well as see them.
  • Prints and canvas

if you want something for the wall.

Coverage can be customized with extra time, a second shooter for video or an engagement session at a later date.

Planning tips

  • Time it for the light

Early morning is quieter in the city. The hour before sunset is warmer and softer, and usually busier.
  • Have a backup for weather

We agree an indoor or covered option in case of rain.
  • Think about the ring box

Keep it somewhere easy to reach without fumbling, and away from the pocket your partner might reach into.
  • Check the location rules

Some places limit tripods or professional shoots. We look into this as part of planning.
  • Tell us about family

If relatives are hiding nearby to join in afterwards, we will plan for it.

Why the photographer matters

A proposal is the one shoot where the photographer cannot ask for another take. It takes someone who will stay unnoticed, react quickly, and then put a nervous, happy couple at ease straight away. Couples who review us often mention our friendly team and attention to detail, and those are exactly the qualities a proposal needs.

Proposals in a cultural setting

Some couples propose privately, and then hold a family engagement such as a Roka, a Sagai or a Nichayathartham. We photograph those too. See engagement photography and event photography.

Questions to think about before you book

  • Will your partner suspect anything?

If they might, we can plan a cover story, such as a friend’s photo shoot or a dinner reservation nearby.
  • Do you want to be seen proposing?

A busy landmark gives you an audience. A quieter spot gives you privacy. Both work, but they need different plans.
  • Do you want video?

Hearing what you said, and what they said back, is something many people wish they had afterwards.
  • What happens next?

If you are heading to dinner or a party, we can plan the portrait session around it.

Where we photograph proposals

New York City is the most popular place for proposals we are asked about, from Manhattan to Brooklyn; see proposal photography in New York City. We also photograph proposals across Long Island, including the Hamptons, and in New Jersey, including the Jersey City waterfront. When the answer is yes, we would be glad to talk about your wedding. Tell us your plan.

How we stay out of sight until you kneel

Staying hidden is mostly about looking like we belong. In a park that means a camera bag like any visitor’s and a lens pointed at the view. On a rooftop or in a restaurant it means arriving before you, taking a seat and looking busy with something else.

We usually work from a distance with a long lens, so we can stay well back and still see both your faces. If your partner might recognize us from a family event, tell us and we will plan around it.

  • We tell you what we will be wearing, so you can spot us
  • We confirm by text that we are in place before you arrive
  • We stay back until you wave us over
