Engagement Photographer in New York City
Engagement and pre-wedding shoots across New York City: Central Park, DUMBO, the Brooklyn Bridge, Long Island City and neighborhoods that mean something to you.
An engagement shoot is the first time most couples are photographed together by a professional, and New York is one of the best places in the world to do it. As an engagement photographer in NYC, we help you choose a location, a time and a plan that fits you, then guide you gently through the session so you can relax and enjoy it.
Choosing your location
The city offers a location for every style. For classic New York, Central Park’s Bow Bridge, Bethesda Terrace and the Mall under the elms are hard to beat. For skyline views, DUMBO’s Washington Street and Pebble Beach frame the Manhattan Bridge, and Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City looks across the East River at Midtown. For neighborhood charm, the brownstones of the West Village, Brooklyn Heights and Fort Greene give quiet streets and stoops. For something modern, the High Line, Hudson Yards and the Oculus offer clean lines and glass.
Many couples combine two nearby spots, for example the Brooklyn Bridge walkway and DUMBO, or Central Park and the Upper East Side streets, so the gallery has variety without hours of travel.
Timing and crowds
Popular NYC locations are busy by late morning. Sunrise sessions give you soft light and near-empty streets, which suits DUMBO and the Brooklyn Bridge especially. Golden hour before sunset is the most flattering light, though the most famous spots will have other people around. We plan the route so you are in the best place for the light at the right moment.
Seasons
Spring brings cherry blossoms and magnolias in Central Park and across the boroughs, usually in April. Fall is many couples’ favorite, with warm color in the parks and comfortable temperatures. Summer works well at sunrise or in the evening, and winter gives holiday lights and windows in Midtown, or a snowy Central Park if the timing works out.
Indian and South Asian pre-wedding shoots
Many of our couples plan a pre-wedding shoot with a mix of outfits: something casual, then a lehenga, saree, sherwani or kurta that echoes the wedding colors. New York suits this well, with bright traditional clothing against brick, stone and skyline. Some couples choose a meaningful place, such as the neighborhood where they met or a street near family in Jackson Heights or Flushing. We plan outfit changes around nearby cafés, hotels or a car, and keep jewelry and dupattas safe in the wind. See Indian wedding photography in New York City.
Permissions and practicalities
A small, handheld engagement session in a public park or street usually needs no special arrangement. Larger setups, props or some private and managed spaces can require permission, and certain gardens and buildings set their own photography rules. We will tell you if your chosen spot needs anything arranged in advance.
Using your photos
Engagement photos are often used for save-the-dates, a wedding website or a welcome sign at the reception. They also help you get comfortable with our team before the wedding day. If you are planning the proposal itself, see proposal photography in New York City, and if you would like a short film of the session, ask about our videography team.
